Whether you are experiencing specific symptoms or simply want to prevent hearing issues from arising, our evaluations are valuable in maintaining and improving your hearing.

What Is a Hearing Evaluation?

A hearing evaluation is a complete assessment of your auditory system, which includes both your ears and your brain’s ability to interpret sound. At NeuroHear, we conduct comprehensive audiological evaluations. This means we examine how you detect sounds and how well your brain processes them. Our evaluations include a variety of tests that measure hearing sensitivity, speech recognition, and auditory processing. We use both traditional and non-traditional methods, ensuring that each evaluation is tailored to your individual needs. This approach allows us to accurately identify hearing loss, auditory processing disorders, or other underlying concerns that may impact communication.

What Happens During a Hearing Evaluation?

During your appointment, you will meet with Dr. Ina Selita, who will begin by discussing your medical history and any hearing-related symptoms you have noticed. She will examine your ear canal and eardrum to check for physical conditions that could be affecting your hearing. You will then undergo a series of hearing tests in a quiet, comfortable environment. These tests typically involve listening to a range of tones and speech at various volumes and pitches. Depending on your specific concerns, we may also assess how well your brain processes complex sounds. After the evaluation, we will review your results and provide a clear explanation. If a hearing loss or processing issue is detected, we will discuss your next steps, which may include the use of hearing aids, diagnostic testing, or referrals for further care.

Dr. Selita is a professional that’s very knowledgeable – she treated me a few years ago. She carefully explained my results and options to me carefully so I can understand everything. I would recommend 100%!

Brought my mother to get evaluated by Dr, Selita. She took her time with my mother, more than I’ve ever experienced at a doctors office. I would recommend her to anyone looking to hear better.

Why Are Hearing Evaluations Important?

Hearing loss can be subtle and develop slowly, making it easy to overlook. Left unaddressed, it may lead to social withdrawal, increased cognitive strain, and a reduced quality of life. Comprehensive hearing evaluations help catch problems before they progress and provide a pathway to effective management. At NeuroHear, we emphasize the connection between hearing and brain function. By assessing both, we can deliver more accurate diagnoses and personalized recommendations for each patient.

How often do I need a hearing evaluation?

A baseline audiological evaluation is recommended for all those who are aged 50+ years old. If you have a known hearing loss, tinnitus and/or use hearing aids, it is important to get an annual hearing test to monitor hearing changes and adjust treatment if needed.

How long does a hearing evaluation take?

A full comprehensive audiological evaluation takes about 45 minutes long, depending on the tests needed and the discussion afterwards.

What happens after my hearing evaluation?

After the complete audiological evaluation, we will review your results together and explain what they mean for your overall and hearing health. We will spend time discussing the next steps, which can include monitoring the hearing status, lifestyle recommendations, ways on managing tinnitus or treatment options such as hearing aids or other assistive listening devices. We will work with you to guide you in making a decision that best fits your needs.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for a hearing evaluation?

There is no special preparation needed before a hearing evaluation. We do ask that you bring a list of medications, your medical history, and any questions or concerns you’d like to discuss. We encourage patients to bring a family member or close friend to their appointment as they can provide helpful insight and better understand your results.

Is there any way to prevent hearing loss?

You can reduce your risk of hearing loss by protecting your ears from loud noise, managing chronic conditions that can contribute to hearing loss (like diabetes or high blood pressure), and you avoid ototoxic medications when alternatives exist. Healthy lifestyle habits also support better hearing and brain health.

Can a hearing evaluation diagnose tinnitus?

Tinnitus cannot be diagnosed directly through a hearing evaluation, but hearing tests can help us identify underlying hearing issues or additional contributing factors. The results of the hearing evaluation guides our audiologists in creating a management plan tailored to your needs.

Does insurance cover a hearing evaluation?

In order to best service our patients, NeuroHear is an out-of-network provider practice, meaning we do not participate with insurance. However, we are happy to assist you with any paperwork submissions for out-of-network benefits your insurance provides you. Our office manager can help answer any questions you may have in this regard.

How do I know if I need a hearing evaluation?

If you are aged 50 years old or above, struggle to follow in conversations, frequently ask people to repeat themselves, feel like people are mumbling, or notice any ringing in your ears, it is a good idea to schedule a hearing evaluation.

What are some of the signs of hearing loss?

Difficulty understanding speech especially in noise, trouble hearing on the phone, feeling fatigued after conversations, ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus), or turning up the TV or radio louder than others prefer.

Are hearing aids the only option if I’m experiencing hearing loss?

Not always. Depending on the type and degree of hearing loss, treatment options may include: Hearing aids, Assistive listening devices, Tinnitus therapies, Medical or surgical referrals (if appropriate).
